The great ship Titanic sailed for New York from Southampton on April 10th, 1992. She was carrying 1316 passengers and a crew of 891. At that time, however, she was not only the largest ship that had been ever built, but also as unsinkable, for having 16 water-tight compartments.

The tragic sinking of this great liner will always be remembered for she went down on her first voyage with heavy loss of life. Four days after setting out, while the Titanic was sailing across he icy waters of the North Atlantic, a huge ice-berg was suddenly spotted by a look-out.

After the alarm had been given the great ship turned sharply to avoid a collision. Suddenly there was slight trembling sound from below, the captain went down to see what had happened. The noise had been so faint that no one thought that the ship had been damaged.

Below, the captain realized to his horror that the Titanic was sinking rapidly, for five of her sixteen water tight compartments had already been flooded.

The Nobel Prize is the world’s most prestigious and important prize. It has been given since 1901. The prize is given to persons with outstanding contribution to Physics. Chemistry, Literature, Medicine, Peace and Economics. Economics was added to the list in 1969 for the first  time.

The Nobel Prize was instituted by a man who was the inventor of dynamite. This scientist was Alfred Bernard Nobel. He was born in Stockholm, Sweden on October 21, 1833 and he died in 1896. Though he was a citizen of Sweden he was educated in Russia. He earned a huge  sum of money by selling of dynamite.

At the time of his death Nobel left behind a huge amount of money. He also left a will indicating that the interest on this money should be given to persons for their outstanding contribution to the subjects mentioned above.

In the same year he admitted himself in Dhaka Medical College under Dhaka University and studied there for seven years and completed his MBBS.

Then he went to England and obtained MS (CTS) in cardiology from Cardiff University School of Medicine, England. Now, he is a world class cardiac surgeon serving the nation.

Socrates was a great philosopher. He was a great teacher too. He lived in Athens in Greece. About 2500 years have passed simne he died. This great man was the wisest philosopher and teacher of his time. However he did not die a natural death. He was killed by the rulers of Athens.

Socrates was born in 459 BC in Athens. It was the home of sculpture. Probably his father was a sculptor. He helped his father in his work. He wanted to spread knowledge among the people. To educate the people was the mission of his life.

He would often go out in the street of Athens. He would stop the passers-by at different places in the streets of Athens and ask them simple questions. If their answers were wrong. he would correct them.

Socrates soon became very popular with the young people who learnt from him. But some men in the authority became jealous of the popularity of Socrates among people.

They brought two charges against him. One was that he was educating the traitors. The other was that he was corrupting the young men of Athens. Finally he was killed by drinking a cup of juice of Hemlock.
