A tribe or a community of people that shares a cultural tradition is called ethnic people. Their tradition, their culture, their religions are not the same as we have in modern world. The western people find them interesting for their old traditional culture.
Though Bangladesh is small country, she has some ethnic groups. They hold a very important place in the culture of our country. Most of the ethnic people live in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The rest of the people live in Mymensingh, Rajshahi and Sylhet. They live in the hilly areas.
Forest, vallys and rural areas are also inhabited by them. They are mainly farmers. Their cultivation is known as ‘jhum chash’. They prepare a piece of land in the forest or on the slope of a hill and sow seeds there. Thus they grow crops for their food. This is called ‘jhum cultivation’.
Ethnic people are Hindus, Christian or Buddhists by religion. Some of them have their own religions. They speak in their own mother tongue. Some of the ethnic groups are the ‘Chakmas’, the ‘Marmas’, the ‘Tipperas’, the ‘Mogh’ and the ‘Moorangs’ who live in the Hill Tracts.
The ‘Sanotals’ live in Rajshahi. The ‘Khasias’ and the ‘Monipuries’ are found is Sylhet. The ‘Hajangs’ and the ‘Garos’ live in Mymensingh. The characteristics and lifestyle of the ethnic people are different from, vallys.
Their houses, foods, dresses, entertainment types, sports, songs, dances, pastimes are different from those of ours. They themselves make their dresses. We are proud of them. They are peace loving, hardworking and simple. We should respect their culture, tradition and lifestyle.

Pearls Or The History of Pearls
Pearl is a small hard shiny white ball. It is found inside the shell of an oyster. It has a great value as a jewel. It has a long history. Probably, the first pearl was discovered thousands of years ago. Men discovered it while they were searching for food at the seashore. In the religious texts, literatures and mythologies, pearls have been mentioned many times.
The ancient people of Egypt valued pearls so much that they were buried with them. It is said that Egyptian Queen Cleopatra would dissolve a pearl in a glass and drink it as a sign of love and respect for the entire nation. To the Greeks, pearls were a sign of wealth and social position.
The beauty of pearls was associated with love and marriage to them. In ancient Rome, pearls were considered the greatest sign of wealth and social status. The young girls of noble families loved to wear the beautiful necklaces of pearls.
Considering pearls as good luck, the brave knights used to wear them in the battles to have a victory over their foes. The pearl gives beauty, pleasure, status and good luck for aristocrats but the divers who collect oysters from the bottom of the sea for pearls are to face dangers and difficulties for the work.

The Ama Divers
‘Ama’ means ‘women of the sea’. ‘The Ama Divers’ are amazing groups of women in some fishing villages along the coast of Japan. They worked as ‘Ama’ and are still working as ‘Ama’. They are independent divers. They earn their livelihood by diving.
They are good divers and they can dive to the depth of the sea up to 25 metres. It is surprising and they dive without oxygen tanks or other breathing equipment. Instead, they use their own skills and breathing techniques.
They use their skill and technique to push themselves down to the bottom of the sea and back to the surface again. They are able to hold their breath for up to two minutes. ‘The Ama Divers’ have some special qualities.
Some of the qualities are careful watching, lung capacity and hunter instincts. Nowadays, changes are noticed among ‘the Ama Divers’. Some of these young divers are going to the city for other jobs. The rest of the divers are now aged between 50 and 60.
There are also some divers who continue to dive even at their 70s. So, the occupation is now dying away. If the young people are not interested in this work, very soon the Ama Divers will become a part of history.

River Gypsies in Bangladesh
River gypsies are an ethnic group of people in our country. Local people know them as ‘bedey and bedeyni’. The gypsies have their own culture and lifestyle. They live in groups. They do not have their own land and so they lead a nomadic life.
They travel from one place to another. The gypsies roam across our rivers and waters from May to December in small country boats. They use their boats as their houses. When in winter, rivers and other water bodies dry up, they return to the mainland.
Then they make their temporary tents on the open river bank. They relax in the tents by doing some leisure activities. When the monsoon comes, they become busy with fishing. They also dive in water for natural pearls. Sometimes, they make camp for a couple of weeks. Male gypsies or ‘bedey’ catch snakes and entertain people with snake charming.
Besides, they sell herbal-cures for earning. Some female gypsies or ‘bedeyni’ go to village houses for earning. They can hypnotize the villagers by their skills. Most of the cases they give false treatment. They are able make the illiterate villagers believe in their treatment by trick. Sometimes, they heal old people’s pain by sucking out blood from their body.
They use cow-horn to do this. Local people call this horn ‘Shinga’. Some female gypsies sell bangles, laces, cloth and cosmetics among the villagers. Many villagers believe they possess magical power.

The Wheel and Its History
A wheel is a circular object. It rotates around its axis and help easy movement of things across a surface. The wheel is the greatest invention of human beings. It is one of the most important inventions among so many inventions in the world history.
It is also one of the ancient inventions. Our modern civilization mostly depends on the wheel. It owes much to the wheel. At present, we find wheels everywhere. Our cars, trains, planes, wagons etc use wheels to move.
Besides, wheels are used on most factories and farm equipments. Fans, propellers, turbines are also other types of wheels. Therefore, the wheel is very important. We cannot imagine our modern civilization without wheels. But the history of the wheel is unknown.

The Fastest Train I like Most
There are a lot of speedy trains in the world. They are the TGV train of France, the Bullet Train of Japan, the High speed Rail of China etc. My most favorite train is the Bullet Train of Japan. Though it is slower than the TGV, it has the advantage of being the magnetic train.
So there is no need of electricity to run this train which is an important factor for me to choose this one. It is speedier than the High Speed Rail of China. So it is capable of saving the precious time of the busiest people. The highest speed of this train is 300 km/h (186 m/h).
It is currently looking forward to enhancing its speed up to 320 km/h (199 m/h). Japan is the pioneer of making unconventional magnetic train sets and they also hold the world record of it.
In a test run, they were able to achieve a maximum speed of 581 km/h (361 m/h). But it has not yet been operated commercially. There is no doubt that this train is a benchmark of speedy trains in the world.

Paper
Paper is at the heart of modern civilization. Though art of writing was invented very early, paper is a more modern invention. Before paper was invented, people used surface of stone, wood, leaves, etc. for writing. Those things were not easy to carry.
Then for ages, people looked for easy writing materials. Finally, paper was invented in China in 105 A.D. Before paper age, knowledge was very restricted. Paper made it easy to keep written record and thus helped spread of knowledge.
It became easy to carry a book of hundred and thousand pages while it was quite impossible to carry a book written on stone or on heavy metal sheets. Now, paper is made in mills. It is made from rags, bamboo, straw, grass, cotton, wood, fiber etc. All these things are boiled first with soda and lime and the pulps are made. Then the pulps are spread on flat and smooth plates.
These are then dried and cut into pieces. In this way paper is made. We use white paper for writing and printing. Coloured paper is used for decoration. Coarse paper is used in packing. It is also used for making houses in Japan. So the uses of paper are many. It has become a part and parcel of our life.
